A brief history of Russian Hill

Russian Hill’s origins can be traced back to the Gold Rush era, when settlers were said to find a small burial site at the hill’s summit, believed to contain the remains of Russian fur traders. Although the graves were eventually removed, the name Russian Hill remained.

The area was rugged and challenging to access. But by the late 1800s, a few adventurous San Francisco locals, drawn by the hill’s panoramic views, began establishing homes here. Among the earliest structures here were modest wooden cottages built by those who cherished the quiet seclusion and scenery that the elevated area offered.

In 1878, the introduction of the California Street cable car line made the neighborhood more accessible. Grand Victorian and Edwardian homes began to appear alongside the original cottages. Noted architect Willis Polk’s designs, including the iconic homes along Vallejo Street that still stand to this day, introduced a blend of elegance and innovation that helped define the aesthetic of Russian Hill.

The 1906 earthquake and fire devastated much of San Francisco, but the high elevation of Russian Hill spared parts of it from the sweeping fires, allowing some historic structures to endure.
